James Cameron’s Avatar has earned the title for the most expensive movie ever created. In my opinion it was well worth it. I can say without a doubt in my mind this movie has revolutionized the world of cinema. I love movies that are bold and movies that try something new, and Avatar has done both. Avatar is one of those movies that comes along very rarely that make you come out of the theater looking at life in a different way and asking yourself questions that you’ve never asked.
I will do my best to write this review without spoilers but there will be some things I talk about in regards to the plot line, however I will not give away any of the good stuff.
Avatar starts off like a great sci-fi movie showing a spaceship floating in space. Jake Sully, the main character of the movie is just waking up from a five year sleep in cryogenics. From this scene on you instantly know that James Cameron has revolutionized 3D and has taken it to a level that has not been seen before. Jake is an ex marine, and also a paraplegic who has come to the planet Pandora to take part in the Avatar program. An avatar is hard to explain but it is basically a body that was grown by scientists that fuses human and Nav’i DNA togeather. The Nav’i are the native humanoids of Pandora. Jake can then get in side a machine and link his mind with his Avatar and he becomes that Nav’i.
A really amazing scene in the movie is when Jake first mind links with his Avatar body. He first starts to wiggle his toes and James Cameron does a fantastic job of showing freedom. It amazing to watch as Jake gets to walk again and feel the dirt underneath his feet.
The views in this movie are beautiful. You feel as if you have opened your eyes and are looking through a window to a new world. My favorite scenes are the night scenes. The entire Jungle of Pandora is bio luminescent. Everything glows and you get a real magical feeling. There are mountains that float in the sky, and the wildlife is a treat to watch. There are so many amazing visuals that I am actually having a hard time even explaining them, because it is not something that translates well to words. It is something that you must…no need to see.
Straight away when I first saw Neytiri I fell in love with her. She is so passionate and such a loving being, you can see it in her big eyes. She is tough, she must be to live on Pandora, yet she is also soft, loving, and accepting. The Avatar team did such a great job on bringing a computer generated thing come to life. I never once thought “wow that’s CGI”. I was thinking “wow I am watching a new life form”. Neytiri must teach Jake the life of the Nav’i and those scenes are truly magical moments. I honestly even got choked up a couple of times, not because I was sad but because it was beautiful to watch the love for nature, and the respect for life of all kinds. The Nav’i are very passionate individuals who share a deep connection with nature.
The 3D effects in this movie were unlike anything I’ve seen before. They are not gimmicky 3D effects. They add an entire new level of immersion into the movie. If you are wanting to see a pie go flying in your face on screen this isn’t the movie for that. This movie uses 3D in an artful and tasteful way. It allows you to land on an alien planet and experience everything that planet has to offer. Believe the hype , this movie will revolutionize film. It is bigger than going from black and white to color. The computer animation is also groundbreaking. Cameron created an entire planet in an extremely detailed computer generated world. Only you can not tell for one second that anything was made using computers. One of the best 3D effects are watching these seeds float around the jungle. They look almost like a jellyfish but they float through the air and glow a white blue color.
The final word is this. Please do yourself a giant favor and go see this movie. Go and see it in 3D. Nothing you read online, no words can even begin to describe what you will experience in the movie theater. Your mind will be blown, and you will walk out of that theater forever touched by the images and the experience you have just been a part of.
